Sunday
21 June: Second Sunday after Trinity
Today,
we meet from our own homes, from 10.20 a.m. for a 10.30 a.m. start via Zoom
meeting ID: 664-485-330. You’ll also need a password code, which you can get
from Revd Andrew Dowsett in advance by calling or texting him on 07783-760-012.
We
greet each other in the Lord’s name
In
the name of the Father,
and
of the Son,
and
of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The
Lord be with you
and
also with you.
We
confess our sins and are assured of God’s forgiveness
Our
Lord Jesus Christ said:
The
first commandment is this:
‘Hear,
O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord.
You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with
all your soul, with all your mind,
and
with all your strength.’
The
second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
There
is no other commandment greater than these.
On
these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Amen.
Lord, have mercy.
God
so loved the world
that
he gave his only Son Jesus Christ
to
save us from our sins,
to
be our advocate in heaven,
and
to bring us to eternal life.
Let
us confess our sins in penitence and faith,
firmly
resolved to keep God’s commandments
and
to live in love and peace with all.
Most
merciful God,
Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we
confess that we have sinned
in
thought, word and deed.
We
have not loved you with our whole heart.
We
have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In
your mercy
forgive
what we have been,
help
us to amend what we are,
and
direct what we shall be;
that
we may do justly,
love
mercy,
and
walk humbly with you, our God.
Amen.
Almighty
God,
who
forgives all who truly repent,
have
mercy upon you,
pardon
and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm
and strengthen you in all goodness,
and
keep you in life eternal;
through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The
Collect
Faithful
Creator,
whose
mercy never fails:
deepen
our faithfulness to you
and
to your living Word,
Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Amen.
We
proclaim and respond to the word of God
Romans
6:1-11
‘What
then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By
no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that
all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as
Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might
walk in newness of life.
‘For
if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be
united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was
crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no
longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we
have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that
Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has
dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the
life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to
sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.’
This
is the word of the Lord.
Thanks
be to God.
Psalm
69:14-20
But
as for me, I make my prayer to you, O Lord;
at
an acceptable time, O God.
Answer
me, O God, in the abundance of your mercy
and
with your sure salvation.
Draw
me out of the mire, that I sink not;
let
me be rescued from those who hate me
and
out of the deep waters.
Let
not the water flood drown me,
neither
the deep swallow me up;
let
not the Pit shut its mouth upon me.
Answer
me, Lord, for your loving-kindness is good;
turn
to me in the multitude of your mercies.
Hide
not your face from your servant;
be
swift to answer me, for I am in trouble.
Draw
near to my soul and redeem me;
deliver
me because of my enemies.
Glory
to the Father and to the Son
and
to the Holy Spirit;
as
it was in the beginning is now
and
shall be for ever. Amen.
Hear
the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory
to you, O Lord.
Matthew
10:24-39
‘A
disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough
for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they
have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign
those of his household!
‘So
have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and
nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell
in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not
fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can
destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet
not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even
the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more
value than many sparrows.
‘Everyone
therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my
Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before
my Father in heaven.
‘Do
not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to
bring peace, but a sword.
For
I have come to set a man against his father,
and
a daughter against her mother,
and
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and
one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.
Whoever
loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son
or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the
cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose
it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’
This
is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise
to you, O Christ.
Sermon
The
Creed
We
believe in one God,
the
Father, the Almighty,
maker
of heaven and earth,
of
all that is,
seen
and unseen.
We
believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the
only Son of God,
eternally
begotten of the Father,
God
from God, Light from Light,
true
God from true God,
begotten,
not made,
of
one Being with the Father;
through
him all things were made.
For
us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was
incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and
was made man.
For
our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he
suffered death and was buried.
On
the third day he rose again
in
accordance with the Scriptures;
he
ascended into heaven
and
is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and
his kingdom will have no end.
We
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the
Lord, the giver of life,
who
proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who
with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who
has spoken through the prophets.
We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We
look for the resurrection of the dead,
and
the life of the world to come.
Amen.
We
pray for the Church and the world
We
pray that Christ may be seen in the life of the Church.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
in
your mercy, hear us.
You
have called us into the family of those who are
the
children of God.
May
our love for our brothers and sisters
be
strengthened by your grace.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
in
your mercy, hear us.
You
have called us to be a temple
where
the Holy Spirit can dwell.
Give
us clean hands and pure hearts,
so
that our lives will reflect your holiness.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
in
your mercy, hear us.
You
have called us to be a light to the world,
so
that those in darkness come to you.
May
our lives shine
as
a witness to the saving grace you have given for all.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
in
your mercy, hear us.
You
have called us to be members of your body,
so
that when one suffers, all suffer together.
We
ask for your comfort and healing power
to
bring hope to those in distress.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
in
your mercy, hear us.
You
have called us to be the Bride,
where
you, Lord, are the Bridegroom.
Prepare
us for the wedding feast,
where
we will be united with you for ever.
Jesus,
Lord of the Church,
hear
our prayer,
and
make us one in heart and mind
to
serve you with joy for ever.
Amen.
We
sing a hymn
We
depart with God’s blessing
The
peace of God,
which
passes all understanding,
keep
your hearts and minds
in
the knowledge and love of God,
and
of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and
the blessing of God almighty,
the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be
among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
Go
in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In
the name of Christ. Amen.
