of the Son,
and

The
Lord be with you
and
also with you.
We
confess our sins and are assured of God’s forgiveness
Our
Lord Jesus Christ said:
The
first commandment is this:
‘Hear,
O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord.
You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with
all your soul, with all your mind,
and
with all your strength.’
The
second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
There
is no other commandment greater than these.
On
these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Amen.
Lord, have mercy.
God
so loved the world
that
he gave his only Son Jesus Christ
to
save us from our sins,
to
be our advocate in heaven,
and
to bring us to eternal life.
Let
us confess our sins in penitence and faith,
firmly
resolved to keep God’s commandments
and
to live in love and peace with all.
Most
merciful God,
Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we
confess that we have sinned
in
thought, word and deed.
We
have not loved you with our whole heart.
We
have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In
your mercy
forgive
what we have been,
help
us to amend what we are,
and
direct what we shall be;
that
we may do justly,
love
mercy,
and
walk humbly with you, our God.
Amen.
Almighty
God,
who
forgives all who truly repent,
have
mercy upon you,
pardon
and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm
and strengthen you in all goodness,
and
keep you in life eternal;
through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The
Collect
Gracious
father,
by
the obedience of Jesus
you
brought salvation to our wayward world:
draw
us into harmony with your will,
that
we may find all things restored in him,
our
Saviour Jesus Christ.

We
proclaim and respond to the word of God
Romans
7:15-25a
I
do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the
very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is
good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will
what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the
evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no
longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So
I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at
hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my
members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the
law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue
me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So
then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a
slave to the law of sin.
This
is the word of the Lord.

Matthew
11:16-19, 25-30
‘But
to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the
market-places and calling to one another,
“We played the flute for you, and you
did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.”
For
John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; the Son
of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her
deeds.’
At
that time Jesus said, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because
you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have
revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All
things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son
except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to
whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
‘Come
to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give
you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble
in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light.’
This
is the Gospel of the Lord.

Sermon
The
Creed
We
believe in one God,
the
Father, the Almighty,
maker
of heaven and earth,
of
all that is,
seen
and unseen.
We
believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the
only Son of God,
eternally
begotten of the Father,
God
from God, Light from Light,
true
God from true God,
begotten,
not made,
of
one Being with the Father;
through
him all things were made.
For
us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was
incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and
was made man.
For
our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he
suffered death and was buried.
On
the third day he rose again
in
accordance with the Scriptures;
he
ascended into heaven
and
is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and
his kingdom will have no end.
We
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the
Lord, the giver of life,
who
proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who
with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who
has spoken through the prophets.
We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We
look for the resurrection of the dead,
and
the life of the world to come.

depart with God’s blessing

peace of God,

passes all understanding,

your hearts and minds

the knowledge and love of God,

the blessing of God almighty,

Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

among you and remain with you always.
